Neurological conditions include everything from sudden onset conditions such as stroke or traumatic brain injury; to progressive, degenerative conditions such as Alzheimer’s disease; and intermittent conditions such as epilepsy and headache disorders.
These conditions vary enormously in terms of the impact that they have on the lives of those affected. Some are rapidly fatal. Some cause a gradual decline in function. Some are chronic and debilitating.
Traumatic brain injury (TBI) and Acquired brain injury (ABI) are two types of injuries that differ in their causes. TBI is caused by external force that damages the brain, such as a blow to the head. While ABI is caused by internal factors, such as a medical condition or illness.
We are currently focusing our funding on sudden onset conditions caused by accident or injury (TBI) which may end up in a prolonged disorder of consciousness.
We are working in collaboration with Encephalitis International, which is the only charity of any size anywhere in the world providing direct support and information to people affected by encephalitis (brain inflammation), raising awareness and furthering our understanding of the
condition through research.
Since 1994, it has grown into an international community of over 13,000 members affected by encephalitis and nearly 3,000 professional members with scientific and medical expertise. Our small but mighty team of 15 staff is based in Malton, North Yorkshire but we have a global reach. Everything they do is about increasing global awareness of encephalitis, saving lives, and building better futures.
